Reece Styche about to score v York

Darlington striker Reece Styche is hoping that it will be goal number seven for him when Quakers take on Salford at Blackwell Meadows on Wednesday night.

Reece scored with a terrific left foot shot on Saturday to put Quakers into the lead against York City, an effort that gave him six for Quakers since he arrived in November, and made him the club’s leading scorer, passing Josh Gillies. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to win the game, because York hit back to win 2-1.

He’s mainly a right footed player – his two penalties for example, have been with his right foot – and he said; “I created a little bit of space inside their penalty area, and I just thought that I would give it a go with my left, and fortunately the ball went in.

“From a personal point of view, it’s good that I’m scoring, but I would feel lots better if I was scoring and winning. It was a bitter-sweet feeling after the game. At half time we were buzzing after a good first half performance, but at full time everyone was angry and frustrated, not just deflated.

“We had a lapse in concentration at the start of the second half, and got punished for our mistakes, which was very frustrating for everyone.

“We played so well in the first half, and we could have been 2-0 or 3-0 up. I don’t think York posed any real danger to us in the first half.

“There were chances for Greg, Harvey, Dave and myself, and I had a goal disallowed, but we shot ourselves in the foot in the second half. We need to be consistent in both halves, and cut out these costly moments in games.

“We have to stick together, and hopefully our luck will start changing soon. “

Reece says that he is thoroughly enjoying playing in front of the Darlo fans. “They have been superb since I came, the best I’ve played in front of, and that includes clubs higher up the league. The fans really help us when they’re behind us, and they’re always making plenty of noise. We’d love to give them even more to shout about. I know they’re frustrated with results, but I can assure them that the players are just as frustrated as well, especially as there have been times in games when we’ve played very well. We’re matching opposing teams, it’s just that every mistake we make seems to be punished.”

Reece has already played against Salford this season for his previous club Tamworth, and finished on the losing side.

“We battered them in the first half and had some great chances, but then we conceded a free kick and they scored in the last minute.

“It would be great to score again on Wednesday night, and finish on the winning side.”
