Diminutive David Speedie climbs highest to get in a header at goal during an FA Cup game against Bury on November 22, 1980.

After joining from Barnsley the Darlington playmaker was a mainstay of the side during his two seasons with the club at the beginning of the 80s, missing only four of 99 fixtures in that period under Billy Elliott’s tenure before moving to Chelsea in 1982.

Quakers had a settled side during 80-81, eight players playing at least 39 of the 46 league fixtures, but only one was in the FA Cup.

Quakers lost this tie 2-0 to the Shakers at Feethams, despite, frustratingly for Elliott’s side, beating the same opposition twice in Division Four during 80-81.

Darlington: Cuff, Kamara, Wilson, Smith, Skipper, Speedie, Hawker, McLean, Stalker, Hamilton, Walsh.
