Darlington manager Martin Gray was proud of his players’ character in the 1-0 win at Marine on Saturday.

The victory was Quakers’ eighth of the season on their travels, but none of the previous wins was in extreme conditions such as those on Merseyside – in fact they were a far cry from the bright sunshine at Colwyn Bay earlier in the season.

MG said; “The wind was very strong in the first half, and at times it was difficult for players to get their passing game going, especially when the rain and hail started.

“Plus, Marine are a team who are battling at the bottom end of the table, so the game was never going to be easy.

“I was very pleased with the players for the huge character that they showed, especially in the second half when Marine had the wind.”

Skipper Kevin Burgess scored the goal that mattered before half time. “I don’t know what he was still doing up there, but I thought he took his goal well.

“I felt though that we should have scored more goals before half time, but at least we’re creating plenty of chances, and we kept a clean sheet.”
