In the latest of our Looking Back series, Frank Tweddle remembers the August 20th 1991 first round first leg League Cup tie between Darlo and Huddersfield, which Quakers won 1-0, in front of a 3,140 crowd.

Huddersfield were our opponents in the first round of the Football League Cup, then sponsored by electrical dealers Rumbelows. We had the advantage of being drawn at home in the first leg and were full of confidence after our great opening day win at Bournemouth. Mick Tait was ruled out with a shin injury sustained in that game, so Gary Coatsworth stepped into the starting line up. The game was decided in the 23rd minute when Mitch Cook chested down David Cork’s curling cross and blasted a fierce left foot shot high into the Terriers’ net. Despite a determined second half fight back by the visitors, the Quakers’ rearguard stood firm and protected the slender lead. So at least we could take something into the second leg at Leeds Road the following week. (However, we lost the second leg 4-0)

Darlo team: Prudhoe, McJannet, Gray (sub Mardenborough 71 mins), Willis, Smith, Gill, Cook, Toman, Borthwick, Cork, Coatsworth.
