Darlington v AFC Telford United

Darlington 0 - 1 AFC Telford United
19 Aug 2017 - 15:00

Quakers suffered their first defeat of the season to visitors telford United at Blackwell Meadows.

Quakers didn’t hit the same heights as they did on Tuesday against York, and they were beaten by a goal early in the second half.

Quakers got the first corner of the game after 2 minutes, but Josh Gillies’ inswinger was punched away by Jasbir Singh.

Telford replied with a free kick on 8 minutes by Jordan Lussey that he curled over the wall and Bartlett comfortably saved.

Quakers had another corner, from the other side of the pitch, on 13 minutes, but Galbraith’s effort was cleared.

Quakers went close from a free kick on 20 minutes. James Caton was fouled 30 yards out in a central position, and Terry Galbraith, playing his 200th game, curled the ball over the wall but just wide of the far post.

Quakers almost created a good opening on 24 minutes, Chris Hunter crossed from the right, crossed deep in the middle towards Beck, and Singh just managed to get his hand to the ball and deflect it away.

Quakers had an opening on 35 minutes when a through ball caught Sutton and Singh undecided, Thompson tried to sneak in, but was fouled by Singh five yards outside the area, and the ref showed the keeper a yellow. Gillies stepped up for the free kick, and curled it just over the top, the ball brushing the top of the net.

Telford had their first chance on 39 minutes when Barnes-Homer found Simpson to his right. Simpson sidefooted the ball into the box from where it was cleared back to him, and this time he hurriedly pulled his shot wide.

Quakers were awarded another free kick for a foul on Thompson five yards outside the box, but Galbraith’s effort took a deflection and ended up in Singh’s hands.

Telford had a great chance in stoppage time when Dinanga held the ball up well and then played in Newby, who ran into the box but fired across the face of goal.

Telford stunned Quakers by taking the lead on 46 minutes. Barsnes Homer kept the ball in on the right, crossed into the area where Newby controlled and fired in a low shot that Bartlett parried and Dinanga forced the ball home.

Quakers tried to get back into it, and sub Leon Scott helped on a Gillies pass for Caton to fire wide.

Telford were denied another by Bartlett. Newby got round the back of the defence and set up Dunbar, and his sidefotted effort was going in the bottom left hand corner until Bartlett just managed to push the ball around the post.

Quakers sent on Harvey Saunders and Scott Fenwick in a reshuffle aimed at going more direct.

They created a chance on 81 minutes when Syers forced his way through the middle and hit a right foot shot that went just wide of the left hand post.

Quakers pushed everyone up front after that, but they couldn’t get break through a well-organised Telford defence, and they finsihed the game empty-handed.
