Darlington 2 Hyde United 3

An injury-time winner saw Hyde United leave Heritage Park victorious for the second Saturday in a row.

The visitors had led 2-0 at half-time, thanks to two tap-ins from Scott Spencer.

Darlington turned the game around in the second half with goals from Nathan Cartman and David Dowson.

However, Hyde snatched all the points at the death as Spencer completed his hat-trick.

Graeme Armstrong was left out of the squad with Monday’s trip to Ilkeston in mind. Anthony Bell started, as did Alan White alongside Cartman up-front.

Darlington dominated the early stages, but Hyde took the lead with their first attack after 12 minutes. The Quakers defence were caught out of position allowing Spencer to tap home from just a few yards out.

Tom Portas finished a great passing move for Darlington as he casually slotted the ball into the corner of the net. However, with the fans and players celebrating, referee Craig Dean disallowed the goal due to an offside Cartman interfering with play.

The blow was doubled just two minutes later, as the visitors went two ahead after 19 minutes. Darlington’s defence failed to clear the ball after multiple attempts and Spencer made them pay, again firing home from close range.

The Quakers continued to dominate possession, with Cartman and Bell both forcing close range saves from visiting goalkeeper Josh Ollerenshaw.

However, at the other end Hyde always looked dangerous and should have gone further ahead after a misplaced back-pass from Chris Hunter.

The second half saw Dowson and Terry Galbraith come on and Dowson, who scored a hat-trick on Tuesday, nearly pulled one back straight away. Thompson played a short pass inside, but a free Dowson could only fire straight at Ollerenshaw.

Cartman did get the Quakers back into the game, after a cross from Adam Mitchell the striker turned and fired home on the half volley.

It wasn’t long before the game was all square with almost half an hour still to go. Thompson played a fantastic ball to set Dowson clear and he showed fantastic composure to find the net.

The game threatened to boil over after Darlington didn’t give the ball back after it had been thrown out of play by Ollerenshaw. A Hyde player had been on the floor, but had stood back up as the ball was thrown.

Darlington had further chances, again through Dowson and then a Galbraith free-kick.

Hyde continued to have chances at the other end and they managed to snatch victory in stoppage-time.

An uncharacteristic mistake from Portas gave the ball away in the middle of the park and Spencer finished well earn his hat-trick.

The only bright spot in the day for Darlington was that the other sides around them also lost.

Next up for the Quakers is an away game at Ilkeston on Monday night.
