Former Darlington winger Rob Purdie scored within two minutes of his first Wembley appearance, but still finished on the losing side.

Rob, who stood by Quakers during the second admin, played for Hereford against Morpeth in the Vase final on Sunday, but after Rob gave them an early lead, the Northern League club hit back to win 4-1.

Midfielder Rob scored with a right foot 25 yarder into the bottom corner after only 75 seconds – a goal worthy to grace any Wembley occasion – and he said; “I was in a bit of space outside the area, so I shouted for the ball. I couldn’t have hit it any better, it went straight into the bottom corner.

“It was a shame that the game didn’t finish after two and a half minutes. For the first 20 minutes we were on top and could have had a couple more.

“It’s disappointing to look back and think that we’ve lost the game 4-1 after we had so many chances in the first half. Even in the second half, if we’d scored when they were 3-1 up, we still had a chance.

“But we have to get things into perspective. We’ve had a great season, we’ve won our league and two cups. A year ago, we didn’t have any players, so if we were offered all that plus a Wembley final appearance, I would have snapped your hand off.

“Morpeth played great, and in the end they deserved to win.”

Rob also passed on his best wishes to Darlington fans.
